Introduce yourself! Who are you and how did you hear about WAGEC?
We’re the team at the Australian Heritage Hotel in The Rocks! It’s the best group of people I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with and the pub is always full of life because of them. We’ve been involved on and off with WAGEC for the last two years however it began when we decided to run a half marathon in May 2018 to raise money for the centre - we managed to raise $13,000.
What does community mean to you?
We’re very fortunate to have a very strong sense of community within our own work place. With pubs and restaurants shut down indefinitely, the strength and resolve of the Aussie staff gives me great comfort that we’ll all stick it out and be back behind the bar as soon as we, can serving our community again. Getting involved with someone like WAGEC is a great privilege for us because we understand the vital work they do within the community.
What strengths did you bring to the WAGEC community? How did you offer support?
Recently, before pubs were shut, the Aussie staff decided to give up their hard earned tips for a few months and donate them to selected charities and organisations. On top of this, the pub does a meat and fruit raffle every Friday night which raises money. As we were closing, we recognized the difficult time ahead for many people as the country shut down, and donating some money to someone like WAGEC seemed like a no-brainer. It’s a relationship we look forward to continuing in the future.
What is something you are grateful for amidst these uncertain times?
We remain grateful for each other, and the friendships made in hospitality. But most importantly, for people who are going above and beyond to help others in this incredibly difficult time.
